Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain: The Colorful Hidden Gem of the Andes

Often referred to as the “little sister” of the famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain offers a more relaxed and equally stunning alternative for those seeking vibrant landscapes without the crowds. This full-day adventure begins with a scenic drive from Cusco through picturesque Andean villages and high-altitude plateaus.

Once on the trail, you'll be immersed in breathtaking mountain scenery, passing herds of llamas, alpacas, and sheep tended by local shepherds. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for soaring condors, caracara falcons, eagles, and—if you're lucky—graceful vicuñas in their natural habitat.

When you finally arrive at Palcoyo Mountain, you’ll be mesmerized by the spectacular natural colors of the multi-hued sandstone peaks that stretch across the horizon. It’s a surreal and peaceful experience, perfect for travelers looking to enjoy the Andean magic at a gentler pace.

The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain 1 Day Hike with Quinoa Expeditions is a scenic full-day excursion from Cusco, Peru, ideal for families, children, and those who prefer an easier hike at high altitude. The tour includes a visit to three colorful Palcoyo Mountains and stunning Andean landscapes. Along the way, travelers stop at the village of Checacupe to admire its Inca (15th century) and colonial (17th century) suspension bridges. The journey also offers views of local wildlife such as alpacas, llamas, and native birds, as well as insight into the daily life of Andean communities. The tour runs from 4:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and starts and ends in Cusco.

Start your adventure early with hotel pickup in Cusco between 4:00–4:30 am. Travel 1 hour and 40 minutes to Cusipata village for a delicious buffet breakfast made with local ingredients. After a short rest stop, continue 20 minutes to Checacupe village to visit historic bridges built by different cultures.

Then, travel 1.5 hours to the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain. Along the way, admire local wildlife and Andean communities. From the parking area, take a 40-minute walk to the viewpoint of the three Rainbow Mountains. If you're up for it, hike further to see the unique stone forest and enjoy stunning panoramic views.

After exploring, return to Cusipata for a traditional Peruvian buffet lunch before heading back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival between 5:30–6:00 pm.
